On Saturday 4 October, the 2008 Qantas Pathfinders Charity Flight landed in 'The Alice' for the day. The Charity Flight raised over $90,000 for the Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children (RIDBC).
The outback themed trip included a special Qantas return flight from Sydney to Alice Springs, a visit to Alice Springs’ famous Telegraph Station, ANZAC Hill and the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
Passengers were treated to a bush tucker lunch at the National Road Transport Hall of Fame and a touching performance by indigenous performers Ngapartji Ngapartji.
ABC radio personality Adam Spencer and international best selling author and RIDBC Ambassador, Tara Moss joined passengers on the sold-out flight.
"It was a fun-filled day for a wonderful cause," Adam said.
"The day-trip format is a great concept. Although I'd been to Alice Springs before, the trip provided a good taste of the area's great scenery, culture and people."
"This was my fifth Qantas Pathfinders Charity Flight and they just keep getting better each year," Tara said. "I had never been to Alice Springs, or Mpartwe, before. It truly is a unique part of the new country I call home.”
"Although it’s a fabulous trip, at the end of the day the important thing is that the event raises funds to help children with sensory impairment all over Australia. It’s been a pleasure to be involved with such a great charity for the past nine years, and the annual charity flight is something I always look forward to."
The flight is now in its seventh year and all proceeds from this year's flight will go to the Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children's RIDBC Teleschool, a service that uses the latest communications technology to link children living in remote and regional areas of Australia with specialist teachers at RIDBC.
The Qantas Pathfinders Charity Flight is the flagship event of Qantas 'Sharing the Spirit' initiative, and is organised by the Qantas Pathfinders Auxiliary, a team of volunteers from the Qantas community.
Qantas plays a crucial and generous part in the flight each year by supplying the 737 aircraft and by donating the catering. The Flight Crew also volunteer their time.
The success of this year's Qantas Pathfinders Charity Flight was due to the generosity of sponsors: Shell Aviation, Qantas Flight Catering, Deutsche Bank, Air Services Australia, Sydney Airport Corporation Ltd, Dyson's Cobb & Co Coaches, Raymond Weil, Alice Springs Airport, the National Transport Hall of Fame, The Royal Flying Doctor Service and Tourism Central Australia
The destination for next year's flight is still under wraps, but due to the popularity of this year's flight, anyone interested should call 1300 662 033 or email Kaye.Bailey@ridbc.org.au.
RIDBC is the largest independent special educator in Australia. It provides education services to more than 800 children with a hearing or vision impairment and their families, and provides hearing and vision screening for thousands more.
The voice of Tara Moss, well-known model, author and RIDBC Ambassador, is being heard over Sydney's radio airwaves encouraging support for the 2008 Qantas Pathfinders Charity Flight. This flight will take off to Alice Springs on Saturday the 4th October to raise funds for the Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children's Teleschool. Tara will also be special guest aboard the flight, joining ABC's Adam Spencer.
A big thank you to Tara and to the Take 2 Creative Audio team for all their support with promoting this event.
